THE PROGRAMME
Schools participating in the Latin Excellence Programme received:
Funding: support to build their Latin provision sustainably; to support teacher time, administration and printing costs, and bursary costs to support enrichment (particularly for students eligible for Pupil Premium).
Curriculum: a fully resourced Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curriculum to support all students regardless of starting point. This included support for schools introducing GCSE Latin ab initio as well as taking on the Key Stage 3 curriculum, designed for approximately 100 minutes per week. The Centre takes an evidence-led approach to curriculum design to ensure every student is supported to excel in studying Latin. Our approach carefully breaks down a coherent body of core knowledge, cumulatively sequences it for mastery, and trains teachers to use whole-class, direct instruction. Our work with Oak National Academy means we have an excellent repository of online lessons and curriculum materials used to provide training, cover lessons and home study.
Enrichment: throughout the life of the programme, the Centre organised and arranged activities and trips for all students. This includes domestic and international trips to places of interest.
Expert support: Schools received dedicated support from an expert practitioner, visiting at least once per term to provide guidance, feedback and training, and to update school leadership on the progress of the subject in the school. This was complemented with bespoke virtual support.
Training: the Centre delivered regular, high-quality CPD for teaching Latin in the state sector (six times per year), closely aligned with the ECF and NPQs. In addition to this, new schools joining the programme attended a training event in London to see the curriculum in action in a range of schools and to participate in curriculum workshops.
Regional Hubs: the programme established 4 regional hubs, led by local schools, promoting the aims and vision of the Latin Excellence Programme and supporting new schools to join the programme, share best-practice and lead training.
OUR AIMS
The aims of the programme included:
To increase the proportion of disadvantaged students studying GCSE Latin in non-selective schools outside of London, the South East, and the East of England.
To improve GCSE Latin attainment in the state sector, particularly in target regions across England.
To provide participating pupils with access to enrichment and extra-curricular experiences connected to the study of Latin, such as trips abroad.
To ensure the introduction of Latin in more state schools is sustainable beyond the life of the programme, when compared with the levels of Latin teaching in state schools in England in 2021.
To improve the delivery of the programme through continuing independent evaluation and internal monitoring, including tracking the progress of participating pupils annually.
