ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT FOR OUR WEBSITE

This accessibility statement applies to http://www.latinexcellence.org/ website.

This website is run by Future Academies. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen and without content being truncated or overlapping

  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some input fields that collect an individual’s personal data in the ‘Contact’ page do not have the necessary “autocomplete” attributes.

Issues affecting people with low vision

  • There is a limit to how far you can magnify the flowchart on our ‘The-programme’ page.

  • The flowchart in our ‘The-programme’ page is an image so it may pixilate when magnified.

  • There are some combinations of foreground and background colour for buttons and video controls in the YouTube video in the home page that do not have sufficient colour contrast.

  • The embedded YouTube video on the home page has no audio description of the visual content.

Issues affecting screen reader users

  • The volume slider in the embedded YouTube video is not marked up correctly for screen readers.

  • The expanded / collapsed state of the mobile menu is not announced.

  • In the ‘Contact’ form assistive technologies are not alerted immediately where there is an error. However, there are error messages next to each field that is in error.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances, listed below.

Non-accessible content

Some parts of our website may not work for everyone, as detailed below.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

  • The decorative image below the 'Why join our programme?' heading in the home page does not have an “alt” attribute. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).

  • The video below the 'Why join our programme?' heading in the home page has no audio description for its visual content - WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.3 (Audio description or media alternative (Pre-recorded)) and WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.5 (Audio description (Pre-recorded).

  • Some input fields that collect an individual’s personal data in the Contact page do not have the necessary “autocomplete” attributes. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.5 (Identify Input Purpose).

  • The flow chart in the Programme page is an image of text. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.5 (Images of Text).

  • Various buttons and slider controls in the YouTube video on the home page do not have sufficient colour contrast against the background. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.11 (Non-text Contrast).

  • The volume slider in the YouTube video is not marked up correctly for screen readers. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and relationships) and WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, role, value).

  • The expanded / collapsed state of the mobile menu is not conveyed programmatically. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and relationships).

  • There are HTML validation errors on all pages, although they have no impact on the user experience. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 (Parsing).

  • In the Contact form, assistive technologies are not alerted where there is an error. WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (Status Messages).

Disproportionate burden

The website is built using the Squarespace platform and we have implemented all the fixes that are possible. To fix the remaining issues, we would need to completely rebuild the website using another platform. The cost of doing this is prohibitive.

We cannot fix the colour contrast issues in the YouTube video player. Also, YouTube does not support audio description. To fix these issues, we would need to use a different video player, which is not possible on the Squarespace platform.
