North East Hub Trip to Hadrian’s Wall

50 Polamites and 30 pupils from Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham, ventured to Hadrian’s Wall and The Sill, National Landscape Centre, this term for a day of Ancient History, Geology and a fair amount of hill climbing! It was a really lovely day for both pupils and staff.

We are especially grateful to Annie Marlow, from Durham University, for her Geology workshop, Charlie Furber, Programme Director of the Latin Excellence Programme, for his support with the Ancient History, and all of the education team at the Sill.

Huge congratulations to our own pupils who were beautifully behaved all day, asked fantastic questions and were generally delightful.

So, what did the pupils think?

It was fun to experience seeing Hadrian’s Wall first hand. I now know that it was Emperor Hadrian who ‘brought back beards’. And, Roman toilets are disgusting. The poo brush is just wrong. 4 stars.

I really enjoyed going up and down hills and I also fell over several stiles. Mrs. Stuart taught me that the soldiers on the wall were Spanish. Who knew?!
— Maisie H. Y7
I very much enjoyed how many sheep, Cheviots my favourite breed, were living around the wall. I also really enjoyed seeing Sycamore Gap.
— Clover C. Y7
I really enjoyed seeing the wall, even from a different angle. Thank you to Miss Hawkins for getting me there.
— Archie J. Y7
I love looking at the amazing views. Top class!
