Eboracum (York) Study Trips

On 20th June and 11th July 2023, students from Polam Hall School in Darlington and Phoenix Academy in Shepherd’s Bush respectively went on a trip to York. The trips were excellently organised and delivered by Mrs. Stuart, who teaches Latin at Polam – we cannot thank her enough. Students examined the Roman foundations of the walls of York and visited the Roman rooms at the Yorkshire Museum, including having the opportunity to walk on an actual Roman mosaic. We hope that their learning from this trip can be applied to other cities they may visit which were once part of the Roman Empire.

We had much positive feedback from students and parents, some of which is given below:

Many of us have fond stand-out memories from school that have stayed with us into adulthood… For our child, I'm convinced the Latin trips to York and London will absolutely be amongst those memories. My son has loved these trips. Both have been that rare combination of over-excitement for weeks leading up to it, but without the normal anti-climax that comes from that. Rather, he's talked with equal passion afterwards. From a parent perspective, I didn't expect this much from the Latin programme. I assumed it was ‘just another language’ (said as a naive scientist) and had no idea of the breadth of cultural, historical, and anthropological learning that would come along with it. To have been able to access all of this in a state-funded school is truly amazing.
