THE CENTRE FOR LATIN EXCELLENCE
The Centre for Latin Excellence was established in 2022, and funded by the Department for Education, to deliver the Latin Excellence Programme. The Latin Excellence Programme closed in February 2025, and over two and a half years was successful in increasing the uptake of and attainment uptake of and attainment in Latin in state schools across England.
WHAT DID SCHOOLS RECEIVE?
The Centre worked with non-selective state schools across all regions of England. Participating schools received:
Funding: support to build their Latin provision sustainably, including teacher time.
Curriculum: a fully-resourced, evidenced-based Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curriculum to support all students regardless of starting point.
Enrichment: activities and trips for all students.
Expert support: school visits and virtual support from expert practitioners throughout the academic year.
Training: regular, high-quality CPD for teaching Latin in the state sector, closely-aligned with the ECF and NPQs.

CHAMPIONING THE POTENTIAL THAT LATIN CAN OFFER
We champion the transformative potential that the study of Latin can offer students in the state sector. We strongly believe that all students should have the opportunity to learn Latin and access the many potential benefits.
